So I’m furious with Ed Brubaker

Brubaker is leaving Winter Soldier after issue 14 and I’m incredibly angry about this. I am always on the side of creators doing what’s best for them because the big 2 companies do everything they can to exploit them. However, when Brubaker said he was ending his run on Cap, he said he was going to stay on Winter Soldier until it ended. He made a point of encouraging fans who wanted him to stay in control of the character to buy the book.

His answer when I mentioned on how it felt like he wasn’t living up to his promise was that the book was cancelled after 14 issues, but because of either his pleas or a bump from the Cap 2 announcement sales stabilized. His explanation was that in theory he had been fired and he went out and made plans accordingly. And on some level he’s right. He had every right to make plans that were best for him.

Then don’t say you’re going to stay on until the end. Yes you can’t say it’s cancelled, but say how many issues you’ll stay on, because now you’ve essentially lied to fans. Now you’re forced to tell the fans who have spent the last 3 months buying books to keep you on that, “Oh sorry never imagined you guys would actually come through.”

I’m sure Marvel did nothing to help him stay on. I’m sure he wanted to stay on, but it was just too complicated. I know I should blame Marvel for this just as much as I’m blaming Ed, if not more so. But I didn’t take walk 10 miles when my car was broken down to make sure I bought Winter Solder #1 for Marvel, I did it for Ed. I didn’t take on producing the 5am Today podcasts on Wednesdays so that I’d have my lunch when the comic book store opened and I could make sure to buy Cap and Winter Soldier for Marvel, I did it for Ed. So for him to leave the book after saying he would stay on no matter what feels like a fuck you to me and everyone else who made sure to patronize his work
